- Long ago people built fortifications to defend themselves from the Danes. These fortifications were called forts or raths. There are fourteen forts in the townland of Shyan, most of them are round and made of earth, more of them are made of stone. The size of the fort depended on the wealth of the chieftain that dwelt in it. The forts or raths are looked upon as fairy haunts.
