- (continued from previous page)Marriages in olden times generally took place before Lent and Shrove. A marriage taking place on Shrove Tuesday was called a runaway marriage.
Matches are generally made in Country districts. Money was given as a dowry and if there was not enought of money it had to be borrowed or made up with stock or no marriage came off.
People in my district do not remember marriages taking place in houses. The customs of the Country wedding was the married pair returned back from the Church.(continues on next page)- Collector
