Pens were used for writing slates and slate pencils were used for Arithmetic in the higher classes. Each child had to bring one penny a week for the maintainence of the teacher, who was not paid by the Government or any other public body. The local people who could afford it were each to give a load of turf to provide fires for the winter.(continues on next page)
