- The name of my townland is Freeduff which means "black heather". There are many strange names in my district. Not far from my house, are two strange place names, the lakter and another named the raha. The following story is connected with these two place-names. One dark Hallow E'en night as Tom Mc Cabe and his wife sat beside a cosy mud fire in the year 1867. Tom said to Mary this is Hallow E'en night. Will you not follow the old custom and make some colcannon for the supper. So some time in the middle of the night the child began to cry and cried for the remainder of the night. It cried for three long months day and night.
One day in February there was an old man thatching the house and as he was starting at the eve over the house the woman said Mickey will you keep an eye to that fellow for fear he would turn the cradle into the fire till I bring a gallon of water from the well. So to make things sure the old man came down off the ladder, and stood inside of the door and the boy in the cradle(continues on next page)
