    former times. He punished them, and often evicted them for trivial acts, such as cutting a tree, cutting turf or bringing sticks out of bogs.
    Tithes were collected in former times, for the up-keep of the clergy of the Protestant Church. They were collected both in money and kind. The people often resented their collection, and the tithe collectors had soldiers or police with them so that the people would have to pay.
