Forges 23-3-48
About 100 years ago the forges were far different from what you would see now.The roofs were thatched with sedge ,and had no chimney for the smoke to come through only a hole in the roof and you would be sure the black smoke was coming through all the thatch.There was another little hole in the side of the window .Soft old earth was on floor and on wet days there used be small pools of water inside in it.
A narrow door was tied to the jamb with bits of chains and when it used be shut it seemed to be going sideways.Hardly any one could see a smith inside the place would look black .The smiths in those kind of forges used(continues on next page)- Collector
