My grandfather was about seven years old when the famine was there. He used to tell stories about it. One of the stories was that he saw a big man leaning against a fence. He went up to him and he found that he was dead. The man was like a skeleton with the hunger.
There are many old ruins in this district in wich those people lived in, at the time of the famine.
Some of the farmers had barley to grind. They ground it between two flat stones called querns. They gave some of it to the poor people. The flour that it made was very black and the bread made from it was so black that it was called black bread. After awhile the bread got very scarce and then they had nothing to eat only, - mashed turnips, mangolds, dillisk, báinneais, slaidí and mussels.
