- Over a hundred years ago many of the people drank because it was cheap. There was a priest living in Cork called Father Mathew. He did not like the drink because it was doing much harm in Ireland.
This priest started meetings through the country in 1837 speaking against the drink. He held a meeting in Clones in 1837 where the farmyard is now. Many people attended this meeting. He held it in the open air so that Catholics and protestants could hear it.
Everyone there took a pledge for life and got a badge home with them. Some of the people kept it and others broke it. It is said because the people drank that the famine came on the country not long after that.James McCarney- Faisnéiseoir
