- There was an old hedge school in the townland of Tavanagh This school was made of blocks and stones. The roof was of branches and the floor of straw. Sometimes the master would live in the district. The name of the master was Patrick McKenna Drumbern. Sometimes the master would have the school in an old barn and in in the summer time he would have it on the bank of a hedge. The scholars would sit on the sods. The masters seat was of a big stone. At that time there were no pens or pencils. They wrote on slates with slate pencils. The master was very cross, he made the children bring turf sods, and sticks. The master stayed in a famer’s house near the school. They started their lessons an hour after the sun rose and stopped when it was setting. His pay was a guinea(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
