Just before the stalks come up the farmer ploughs the trenches in order to have some earth. Then he earths the potatoes with a shovel.

When the stalks are nearly fully grown they are sprayed.
First the farmer gets a barrel of clean water. Then he gets some blue-stone and puts it in a bag, and fastens the bag to the top of the barrel leaving the blue-stone touching the water. Then he gets some washing soda, and melts it in an ovan or pot over the fire. When the blue-stone is melted he puts the melted washing soda into the water.
