Ar an leathanach seo
- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)branch decorated with some fancy-coloured paper supported sometimes by a lump of brown paper or moss to represent the wren. A real bird is never carried.
On arrival at a house a rigmarole of a song is offered in a low and quick pitch and a few words can be caught here and there. Some householders from charitable motives produce a chunk of sweet cake and some have been known to offer wine or lemonade. The subscription varies from a blank refusal to sixpence. The fourth or fifth arrivals do not receive much welcome as by this time the novelty is wearing off.
The song offered goes something as follows:
"The wran, the wran, the king of all birds
St. Stephen-zes day he was caught in the furze.
Although he is little, his family is great
So wake up landlady and give us a thrate
