    Another story is about the year 1688 Birr became infested with robbers and the neighbourhood was in perpetual alarm.

    declined to comply with the order until he should hear from the Lord Lieutenant. Immediately Oxbergh, Colonel Moore and Colonel Grace besieged the Castle. No provisions could be obtained by the besieged and finally a treaty was agreed upon. Sir Laurence Parsons was arrested but later on he was released. Oxbergh then had his regiment int he castle and in the town of Birr. In April 1689 Sarsfield was sent by Lord Tir Connell to review the army. On his arrival in Birr, Oxbergh's regiment was drawn up on the Birr meadows. Several officers and ladies attended the review. While Sarsfield was inspecting the troops two soldiers ran from the ranks. Immediately Sarsfield threw off his jackboots and pursued them. They were soon over-taken and condemned to death but Oxbergh's
