The tombstone of Michael Ward, died 1729 is surmounted by this figure -On the headstone of the Gavin family - 1776 - these symbols may be seen on either side of a cross.I have been told by Count Plunkett to whom I described these stones, that the figure of the warrior with a spear belongs to some of the earliest examples of tombstones which we have and that is why I give this rough sketch as above
