    2. I daresay that when starting to write on local roads it is not necessary to mention our modern highways but to go into the old by-ways used by our forefathers before the age of petrol, highways trodden by Saints and Pilgrims, perhaps by Kenne and Gallowglass, Warriors and nobles.
Two such roads ran through this district and of these I will give a short account
One of these formerly known as the main road from Tullow to Ferns wound its way across Manaughrim hill to Clonegal.
This portion was afterwards widened to what may be called a third class road, but from Clonegal it leads in its old laborous manner through Johnstown and Corragh on the boundry of Ballinastraw across Gibbet Hill where it is now a mere path to Graigue Cross where it is again a good road branching off at a point to Kilrush Chapel.
A still older road which branches into the other was the road from Shillelagh to Tullow. Some of this also became a portion of a good road more local part
