  1. In 1775 there was a hedge school in Ballyknock, St Mullins, Co Carlow. It was held in Doyle's field beside Ballyknock lane. They had no house to go into when it would rain.
The teacher's name is not known as he was a stranger. He was paid a weekly wages and he lodged at Rourke's.
He taught Irish, English and Latin to his pupils. They spoke the Irish language mostly and did most of the subjects in Irish.
They had no pens nor copies. They wrote on slates with slate pencils.
They had no seats to sit on but stood in classes around the teacher and had no blackboards.
