In Doobally at this time were two powerful clans - Hamiltons and McLoughlins between whom a constant war waged. Each party owned a shop and public house, and they competed with each other as to whom was the better off in the world. This went on for many years.
The prosperity of Tobar decreased from the time the well was cursed, and on June 22nd 1861 came its final destruction. There came thunder and lighting, the worst ever witnessed in Ireland. It appears that this storm was sent purposely by God for the destruction of the wicked town. A number of men who were working at turf on the bog, when the thunder and lighting began, blessed themselves. A Protestant who was present laughed and mocked them from being so superstitious. The next flash of lighting came, there remained nothing but the soles of his boots, while the other men were uninjured.
