These soup kitchens of the famine times were often under the control of the Protestant landlord class, and very often they were used as a means of prosbytising the poor people.
These people were called "soupers", and if any unfortunate Catholic changed his religion he was said to "take soup". This expression is under even to the present day.
Relief works were started to give employment and many roads were made at the time. The people worked at the time. The people worked at them for 4d and 6d a day. The road to Kingscourt was made at this time to replace the old road(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
