- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)rush - candles because they were made from the insides of rushes. The inside of the rush was taken out and dipped in some sort of grease. It was then left for a while to dry and get firm. Then it was stuck in the neck of a bottle or stuck in a small box and hung up in the chimney. This only gave light around the fire and the rest of the house was in darkness. I saw a candle like these in a house belonging to Terence Smith, Cornacarrow a short time ago.
