    There is only one forge in my native parish Drung. The smith of this forge is Higgins and they have been smiths for generations. It is situated along the main road from Cootehill to Cavan. This forge has been recently repaired.
    It is a fairly large forge with a thatched roof. There is a large double door on it. There is also a large pair of bellows and an anvil in it. The ring of the anvil can be heard a long distance off when the blacksmith is at work.
    The blacksmith's chief work is shoeing horses. Ploughs, gates, harrows and other farm implements are also repaired in it.
    Before making an article the blacksmith heats the iron and beats it on the anvil into whatever shape he needs it.
