    When a person buys a cow...

    (1) When a person buys a cow he should put a coal under the churn at the first churning for the fear of fairies should bring the butter.
    (2) When a cow calves one should cut a piece of the calf's ear for fear it should die.
    (3) If one pulls heath from under one's neighbour's cow's gap one will bring all the butter from that neighbour.
    (4) When a cow has her first calf two people should go out with a tongs of fire and stand one on each side of the cow and hand the tongs of fire across to each other under the cow's belly and over her back for fear she would die.
    (5) When a cow calves one should cut a piece of calfs ear for fear it should die.
