  1. Twas on a summer evening
    An old man bent with age
    Landed at the village
    From off that dusty stage,
    “Is this the express office?
    I came to meet our son,
    They told me that the train
    Was due at half-past one.”

    “You’ve made a slight mistake, sir,
    I’d like you for to know,
    This is the express office
    And not the town depot:”
    “You do not understand me, sir,”
    With trembling lips he said,
    “He’s not coming as a passenger,
    He’s coming to us dead.”

    “He joined those Boys in Blue, sir,
    And went off to the war,
    Away from his dear parents,
    Away from home so far
    He’s broken his dear mother’s heart
    And mine is broken too;
    We told him that he’d come back dead
