  1. One evening fair
    To take the air
    I carelessly did stray,
    The fields were decorated
‘Twas in the month of May,
    My heart content
    My mind being bent
    A-rambling I did go,
‘Twas there I spied a charming maid
On the heather where the moorcocks crow.

    I stood amazed,
    On her I gazed
    And wondered for to see
    Such a charming girl
    As appeared unto me;
Her cheeks they were a rosy red,
Her eyes as black as sloes,
    There was none to compare
    To my darling there
On the heather where the moorcocks crow.
    III
    This fair one’s name
    I won’t explain
    Nor where she does reside
