    16.3.38
    In olden times the people never used Indian meal bread, because there was no Indian meal until the time of the famine but they always used oat meal bread. They baked this bonnach with boiling water salt and flour and they cooked it on the griddle before the fire.
    They often used potato cakes, which is called “fadge”, because loaf bread was not common in those days. This bread was made with bruised potatoes which were bruised with a beetle, and, these bruised potatoes were mixed with salt and flour to make it stick together. They often cut this into squares and they cooked it on a frying pan on the fire. Some of the people of this district used to make loaves called “shapes”. They went around the houses with basketfuls selling them to the people for two pence or three pence each, and they never came home until they had all sold.
    In olden days there were three black fasts in the year, Ash Wednesday, Spy Wednesday and Good Friday. On those days if
