In ancient times there was an underground channel, running from Charlestown (Sir Gilbert King's) straight to Ai an Tobair near Lismoyle, where it came out. It is said that this channel was a place of refuge and retreat for armies and it is supposed that ORourke and his army retreated through it. It is now closed up with dirt and mud but water can be seen, to the present day, spouting out on a hill near Lismoyle.
