“There is the remains of a castle called Mullowney's Castle on the lands of Mr Pat Flynn.”
There is the remains of a castle called Mullowney's Castle on the lands of Mr Pat Flynn. Ballinacligha - 2 miles from here.
It is built of stone and mortar - each stone weighs 10 cwt(?) and the mortar was mixed with bullocks blood, so the stones can never be separated.
Some stones were taken from it in '47 and '48 to make part of the Ballincligha road.
There was an underground tunnel which the people of the castle used sometimes.
There is a grave in the castle now- the grave of a woman who died the year of the famine. Her name was Margo McGovern. Her body was wrapped in a straw mat.
