  1. Potatoes are grown in every farm in this district. The greater part are grown in drills which are prepared by the ploughman. He harrows the ground thoroughly after it is ploughed. The drills are built up by ploughing backwards and forwards with a plough which suits the purpose, so that you have every second furrow and drill. The manure is then carted and placed in every fifth furrow. This furrow is afterwards divided, every row for five rows and so on 'til the end.
The first plough that came to this locality was a wooden one and three men were needed to work it. The potatoes are earthed while they are growing to check weeds and to shelter the stalks. When they are in full bloom they are sprayed When digging starts the farmers assist one another in picking the potatoes after the digger, and placing them in pits, or rows where they are afterwards handpicked and stored in houses. Kerrs pink is the most frequently grown in the district also the Arran Banners and the Arranvictors.
