He has a scar (scar = share or portion) in the boat.
A crew of thirteen men operate two salmon fishing boats in the open sea. Small local farmers & their sons form the crew. Each of these men is said to have a "scar" in the boat. They sell the catch & divide the money at end of season.
"Twas a mál"
A mál is the expression used by salmon fishers in this locality for an empty "haul". The net is cast round the fish but latter escape somehow. the net is drawn in with anticipation - result, a mál!

a poisonous plant used for poisoning salmon in river. It grows very plentifully here & exudes a white milky fluid.
