There was a village within four miles of Swinford named Old Castle. There was a certain man who had a little learning and had a school in his own stable.
They had no desks nor seats. The children used to sit on a sheaf of oats and the master used to sit on a little stool. The way he was paid was each child had to give a few shillings.
He would take down the door of the hinges and teach the children to write on it. There was a law once that no one wall was allowed to teach English only all Irish, and then and another law came out that no Irish was to be taught only English. They had to have books and a table. Some of the pupils were very good.- Collector
