Every evening a widow's son came over the fence into Wardon's garden to gather what stumps remained to provide a frugal meal for himself and for his mother. The diligent "Crags" knowing this determined to catch the boy and chek him, so one evening he waited until the boy came along. In he scrambled over the fence and began to gather the stumps as usual but "Crags" coming out from his hiding took up a furze root and catching the boy roughly by the arm he thrashed him severely so much so that on going home, he died. Years rolled by and the day came when "Crags" was forced to go about and beg, and on one occasion when he was footsore and hungry he went into the house of an old feeble widow, the mother of the boy whom he had beaten so cruelly.
