On May Eve the people in our district had an old custom.
If a man came in to a house on May Eve to put a coal on his pipe when he would be going the woman of the house would put a sod of turf on the fire for the coal the man took for his pipe.On May Eve long ago the people would not churn. They would say that someone that would not be churning would take the butter on them and they would have no butter for themselves. My aunt told me that old custom.
