- Candle-making
My grandmother, Mrs Jane Cox of New Rooskey told me how she used to make candles in her young days.
She went to a wet place in the field and pulled some of the thickest rushes she could find.
She brought them home and peeled them on one side. She then put down the frying pan and rendered some fat on it, into juice. She then dipped the rushes in it and put them on a long board to dry. Then when they were well dried she put them under the thatch.
Then when she needed a candle she took one down and lit.Lily Robinson, New Rooskey,
