- The fairs around our locality are held in Nobber, Ardee, Carrickmacross and Kingscourt. The fairs are not always held in the towns, sometimes there are fair-greens for the purpose.
Carrickmacross, Nobber, and Kingscourt fairs are held on the street. Ardee has a fair-green.
Buyers often transact business in the country, at Crossroads and at houses.
There is a toll paid for animals to the town council. When an animal is sold, there is luck-money given, which is called a luck-penny.
When a bargain has been made, people show their agreement by striking their hand and by spitting.
The cattle are marked with marking paint or mud on the flank. When an animal is sold the halter or rope is always given to the buyer.
There are special fairs for sheep, Conham and horses.- Collector
