  1. Old Houses
Long ago some of the old houses were thatched or roofed with corrugated iron or felt. The thatch used was rushes or sedge found growing in marshy places.
The houses were very small and there was not much accommodation for bedrooms, so the bed was placed in the kitchen. It was put at the fire. The fire was always placed in the gable wall.
The front of the chimneys was made of sallies. Some of the houses had no chimneys. Pipes were used instead.
Half-doors are common in the district still.
