    In the district most marriages take pace during Shrove, especially Shrove Tuesday. The month of May and Friday are thought to be unlucky for marriage.
    "Monday for health, Tuesday for wealth,
    Wednesday the best day of all,
    Thursday for losses, and Friday for crosses,
    And Saturday no day at all."
    Matches are still made in the district. Sometimes the couple to be married never meet except on the morning of the wedding. The dowry nowadays consists of money or land. Over 50 yrs. ago goods or stock, such as cattle, horses, sheep, or calves were in vogue. About 80 years ago marriages took place in the houses. A Margaret Walsh resident in Ballyreelish was married by Fr. Heffernan of Clerihan in her own house, now occupied by Wm. Ahearne. At that time Straw-boys came in disguise to the house, sat down and eat and danced. As they were rowdy, the custom has died out. At the present time a feast is still held at the house after marriage, dancing, singing and feasting going on all day and night. Again after a month the "hauling home" takes place i.e. there is an entertainment given at the bride's home on the occasion of her returning back after the honeymoon. After the wedding it was usual to have a race home to the bride's house by men on horseback. The wives rod on a pillion behind their husbands. They rode side-saddle. This pillion consisted of a soft cushion with wood all round it.
