- Long ago when the farmers used sow potatoes. They first dug all the soil that was required for the seed with a spade. Then they went around with a pitch fork to brake the big lumps. When that was done the drills were opened with a shovel and they put out the manure on their backs with a "cliabh" and spread it along the drills.
