    The day before Xmas Eve and on Xmas Eve the woman of the house baked several soda cakes in which she put currants raisins and caraway. She made also a boxty loaf and some potato cake. She also killed and plucked a turkey or goose.
    The globes of the lamps were brightened particularly well Xmas Eve and the kitchen lamp around which holly was entwined was lighted early. A candle was put lighted in every window in the house.
    The meals were usually taken in the kitchen but on this night the supper was taken in the parlour. A lot of bread was cut and put on the table; the best teapot was used. The woman of the house sat at one side of the table and the man at the other. She poured out the tea, and gave sugar and milk to the children. He gave around the bread. The children were indulging in the sweet bread and wishing Christmas would come oftener.
    The religious side was not forgotten either. While the elder girls of the family cleaned and decorated the house, the younger
