The anvil is a square piece of iron weighing about two and a half cwts. It is a foot from the ground. The smith also shoes horses and donkeys. In this country there are never any shoes put on cattle. The smiths, also make ploughs, spades, harrows, gates, shovels, and they also repair any of these implements.
The smith has to get iron in the shop, to make shoes for horses. Another man assists him to put on the shoes.
The smith has a good fire of slack coal. He takes in the iron for a shoe. Then he puts the iron into the fire to heat it, and when properly heated he takes it out of the fire with the pincers. Then he puts it on the anvil. He takes the hammer, and with the aid of another man he makes the shoe ready. Then he fits it on(continues on next page)- Collector
