- Old Houses.
There are a few old houses in the district with very old people living in them. These houses were common long ago but they are not common now.
The houses were thatched with rushes which were found in swampy land. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen which was placed in the corner beside the fire and it was called a shakedown.
The fire-place was not always at the gable wall, but it was sometimes placed in the corner or against the side wall. The front of the chimney was often made of mortar and sometimes of stone and sometimes of clay and wattles. The old people remember (seing) seeing houses having no chimney and houses with the fire in the middle of the floor
The old floors were made of clay and sometimes they were paved.
