- It was the custom for marriages to occur in Shrove. But now it is any time of the year. May is one of the months thought unlucky for marriage. A dowry is always given and mostly always stock. About one hundred year ago people were married in the houses. The customs are a few of sometimes a large crowd of people go the bride's houses for the wedding breakfast. After the breakfast the bride and her husband go away for their honeymoon. They also receive alot of presents. The people who used to be at the wedding on horses raced each other home. The bride would go home the first Sunday when a month would be over.
