- There was a hedge school in Kilpatrick near Ballinea. It was in a farmer's barn. During the day the young boys attended and the grown-ups at night. The master's name was Casey.
Each pupil brought a sod of turf to the master. While the master taught the children they seated themselves on the sods of turf.
The subjects that were taught were English, Irish and Arithmetic.
The master lodged in the farmer's house. His wages consisted of a penny a week.
