Song
“One Sunday in the afternoon I heard a Mother's cry”
One Sunday in the afternoon,
I heard a Mother's cry,
While bitter tears were falling fast
In torrents from her eyes.
She shrieked aloud in accents wild
I thought her heart would break,
Lamenting for her darling boy,
That was drowned in Quilea Lake.
Laurence Butler was his name,
A lad both tall and young.
His tender parents loved him well
And bid him do no wrong
Till on that Sunday in the afternoon
His home he did forsake.
And went to roam for pleasure
By the shores of Quilea Lake.
He undressed himself upon the bank,
And rashly ventured in,
But to his sad misfortune,
Being unable for to swim
Cruel death in triumph waiting
His wicked dart let fly
Which took away his precious life,
