“Pedlars were well known in the district, called "Catherine the Basket", "Smoothing Iron", and Bianconi.”
Pedlars were well known in the district, called "Catherine the Basket", "Smoothing Iron", and Bianconi. They still travel around the district but not so much as previously. Most pedlars bartered thread, pins, needles, laces, +c for rags, bones, horsehair + bottles. They also gave delph in exchange.
The penny was called a 'Wing' or 'Rox". The shilling a 'bob' or 'hog;', sixpence a 'tanner; , 3d a "kid's eye," 4d a "groat" and a 'goat's eye," 6d also. A "keenoge" was a coin valued for 1/2 a farthing. Thoe not seen now are the 4 shilling piece, the groat + the keenage.- Faisnéiseoir
