- The bread used in Ireland long ago was bread made from potatoes. They were grated into a mash while raw, with an instrument called a "grater". It was then put into a linen bag to squeeze the water out of it. Then it was mixed with a few boiled potatoes and salt and baked in a griddle or the lid of a pot. When baked it had a very black colour and they used spread honey on it.
It was a common thing to get gripes and pains after eating it as it was a very strong food.
A man of this locality once ate too much of it and he got those pains and he nearly died. He used to say to the rest of the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
