- Potatoes are a crop that feeds both man and beast. If it were not for the potatoes he people of Ireland would die with hunger. Potatoes were first interduced [sic] into Ireland by Sir Walter Raleigh.
When they were first brought into Ireland the people ate the green stalk that grew out of the potato. But as time went on the people dug up the soil and found under it what we call potatoes.
