"Pedlars" buy and sell on a small scale and deal mostly in small wares such as lace, buttons, collar-studs, combs, pins and needles etc. These people generally live in caravans and travel round the country, not staying long in any place. Jewmen are still to be seen periodically almost imposing their wares on unwilling customers. Others collect feathers.
- Long ago in my district the women knitted stockings and jumpers which they took to the markets in exchange for bacon or other meats which the shop-keepers gave them. The women(continues on next page)
