    house of Lords. The inscription on the stones in the Abbey are a mixture of Latin and Greek.

    NEW ABBEY
    Gold is supposed to be hidden in the New Abbey - People who went searching for it at night were hunted by swarms of bees and a fierce-looking bull. The last Irishman who lived in Rattoo was Pierse McShane who had lands in Crotta too. He was there before Gunn and Staughton took up residence in Rattoo and Ballyhorgan. The Gunn and Staughton estates were so evenly divided that there was but a quarter of an acre between them.
    Rattoo, the seat of the Gunn family is near the confluence of the Feale, Brick and Galey. The ground around is low and marshy, but the Gunn got banks cut and had drains made. Several tracts of land near this place go by the name of Burgessland, from which it is thought that Rattoo had formerly been a corporation and in it stood an abbey of canons regular of St. Augustine.
