- Fifty years ago all marred women wore an ornamented white linen cap. This was a neatly executed piece of work and only an exceptionally handy woman could make, wash or iron one properly. They have gone out of use in Cavan for over fifty years, but it is worthy of note that at least two of exactly similar caps are to be had still in my own grandmother's house in Straleel, Glencolumchille, Co Donegal. They are the only ones that I know to exist.
The cap covers the head, but very often a white scarf or handkerchief was worn across the crown and down the two sides and held in position by the shawl. The ornamented fringes covered the ears and it was fastened by white tapes which were connected with the sides and tied under the chin.
While being laundered a special smoothing iron called a "tally-iron" (Cavan) ("tallion" in Donegal) was used. This iron had a gently-curving bottom surface as well as a smooth spike slightly thinner than a penny pencil and three and one half inches(continues on next page)
