   Gortshanavagh means the field of the heifer. How it received its name is not easy to determine. It was formerly subrented through Lord Kenmare office to the Galways. This townland prior to the famine was thickly inhabited. Many harrowing distressing scenes are said to be witnessed here in the days of that terrible visitation. There is also a Kileen here and old people claim that people were buried here also, but, I believe that any burial that may take place here was in connection the 47 famine their being little doubt that many we laid to rest in forts or such places as appearance handy for interment. Nor many years since I saw a fort passage give way in a field in this townland had this passage defined all through. The fort connected with it has long since disappearance. Those passages have no doubt dwarfed a lot with time but are
