- Before the manufacture of candles in our country, and when there was scarcely any oil to be had, the people made what was known as tallow candles.
It is a substance, brownish yellow in colour, and very hard. The candles lasted much longer than our present day ones.
In many outlying districts, the candles were made of lard, and old bee-wax with a card in the centre for lighting.
