Mr Thomas Owens New Ruskey aged 83 years told me this story.
He said that on the twelvth night when the family were gathered in the home the woman made a cake of some soft matter. Then she got twelve rush candles and stuck them in it. Each member of the family marked a candle for himself and lit it. Then they said the rosary and while they were saying it each person watched his own candle. Whichever candle burned out first, the person it represented would die first and so on until the last one was burned out, and the one that lasted the longest that person would live the longest.Joe Reynolds, Ruskey,
